Fine Grains records is a new music/design project from the Scottish graphic designer and co-founder of the successful DO IT! and The Drop club nights, Alexander Horne. The label will continue Horne’s precedent for anticipating and recognising the most exciting future sounds from scenes around the world and combine it with limited edition artwork, events and international collaborations. For their website launch, Fine Grains invites highly rated Russian beatmaker OL, UK producer ¥OIN and Norwegian skweee musician BEATBULLY to perform alongside Fine Grains founder Horne (Uraki Riddim) and VJ Pop Com.
Dublin label/shop/music mecca All City are having a prolific start to the year, supplying us with over a release a month as we enter Spring. The first release from this year was from LA producer GB (Gifted & Blessed) ‘7 in 24’. A real smack of Detroit from the previously predominantly experimental hip hop beatsmith, from spacey Drexciya-scapes on 7 in 24 to the teasing acid tinged electro of ‘Dog on’, you can hear the track in my latest mix for Tsugi mag here.
DO IT! turns 3! After three years of cutting edge international acts and audio-visual performances, DO IT! bids farewell this Friday at Snafu. This has been in the pipeline for a while so do not fret Aberdeen based DO IT! followers, we have two tasty nights coming up for you guys later this year - not to mention our 3rd birthday on December 9th. For all else, time to introduce you to:
THE DROP Not just another club night. The Drop is the coming together of two Oslo based creatives, Norwegian record label boss and musician Andre Ishak and the Scottish DJ and graphic designer Alexander Horne. With a combined experience of almost ten years working in the music industry and a hefty CV of projects already acquired (Sellout! records, DO IT!, Resident Advisor and Music Export Norway) The Drop will look to represent organic analogue sounds, experimental hip hop and electronica in the best possible way. Don’t wait for The Drop, it already landed.
“We are delighted to serve up a real heavy hitting BBQ of global beats from two talented artists representing Goa, Chile, Berlin, Ldn & Glasgow - places that undoubtedly filter into their explosive and highly regarded productions & live shows. Don’t play the fool if your in the Abz area, come and show your support for the prestigious global beat talents fLako and Auntie Flo this May 13th!”
Few could disagree with the recent resurgence of electronic interpretations of world music. From the Kudaro bass of Buraka Som Sistema to a new wave of Cumbia and a welcomed comeback for tango-infused Gotan Project, even Gilles Peterson is back on the beat with a label hitting the high notes Talkin’Loud once did. On that tip, we are delighted to serve up a real heavy hitting BBQ of global beats from two talented artists representing Goa, Chile, Berlin, Ldn & Glasgow - places that undoubtedly filter into their explosive and highly regarded productions & live shows. Don’t play the fool if your in the Abz area, come and show your support for the prestigious global beat talents fLako and Auntie Flo this May 13th! Poster by SIO.
A skweee showcase introducing one of the best known labels in the genre, direct from Norway and in the UK for the very first time to launch the debut Dødpop artist LP, ‘Kosmik Regn’ by Beatbully. Having sent the dancefloor into a mass skweee sprawl at Unsound, By:Larm and Øya last year - this gig will deliver live sets from key members of the Nordic imprint: Beatbully, Sprutbasss & Melkeveien. With DJ support from DO IT! residents (Uraki Riddim, Kid Bell & White Chocolate) and Hush Hush honcho Giles Walker, visuals by Uber AV and a Funktion One soundsystem - the event promises to be an exciting introduction to the conflict r’n’b and synthetic funk sounds of this Scando analogue movement that has gathered international interest. Poster by Alexander Horne. McSKWEEE LIKE A PIG ABERDEEN!!!
Mini-mix for our 2nd birthday by DO IT! resident Uraki Riddim: tracks by the likes of Onra, Plaid, Aardvarck and Pepe Bradock. Supa mixtape artwork by Sio. Enjoy!
